The Organic Rankine Cycle, or ORC for short, is one of the best-known solutions for extracting power from such energy sources and generating electricity from them. By converting thermal energy into electricity from low to medium-high temperatures, ORCs are suitable for a wide range of applications.
Principles of operation

Organic Rankine Cycle system

This system uses an organic fluid (instead of water), which boils and evaporates at lower temperatures, to power the energy conversion cycle.

Heat absorption

The organic fluid boils and evaporates using a heat exchanger at a temperature lower than the temperature of the heat source.

Expansion

The fluid vapor expands in a turbine, converting thermal energy into mechanical energy.

Condensation

The fluid vapor is converted to a liquid in a condenser, and the heat from the fluid vapor is transferred to the external environment.

Pump

The fluid is returned to its original pressure by a pump to start the cycle again.

Due to the low boiling point of the organic fluid, the organic Rankine cycle also has the ability to effectively utilize waste heat resources at low temperatures (between 80 and 200 degrees Celsius).
This special feature has made the organic Rankine cycle an attractive option for generating electricity from waste heat in various industries such as thermal power plants, refineries, cement factories, food industries, etc.
